The precursors of automobile manufacturers were, of course, the makers of carriages. In Dresden in 1864, Carl Heinrich Gläser founded his workshop to build coaches and horse-drawn sleighs. His company quickly established itself as a maker of luxury carriages, one of the first of which was model no. 614, otherwise known as the Phaeton. At the turn of the century, production began to orient itself toward automobile carriages. Among these carriages “suitable for motorisation” was the Sport-Phaeton of 1909. After the war, the company traded under the name VEB Karosseriewerke Dresden. Following German reunification, it was reincorporated as KWD GmbH, which Volkswagen AG then commissioned to produce welded body components for the Scirocco, Corrado, Passat and Polo, as well as the undercarriage for the Golf.
In 1998, Sitech was founded by Volkswagen AG (49%) and KWD GmbH (51%) in Polkowice (Poland). Production began in 1999, and in 2000, Sitech Sitztechnik GmbH Deutschland was founded in Germany. In 2003, Sitech became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Volkswagen AG.
